What You’ll Learn

What Division Means
Section titled “What Division Means”asks: “How many groups of 3 fit into 12?” or equivalently, “3 times what equals 12?”
The sign means “divided by.” You can also write it as a fraction: .
Key ideas:
- Division is the opposite of multiplication: if , then
- Dividing by 1 changes nothing:
- A number divided by itself is 1:
- Zero divided by anything is 0:
- You cannot divide by zero: is undefined (it doesn’t work)
Using Multiplication to Divide
Section titled “Using Multiplication to Divide”The fastest way to divide is to think of the related multiplication fact:

This is why knowing your times tables makes division almost free.
